Stacking Rings on a Pole

Stacking rings on a pole is a compound behaviour Kavat and I explored together in 2017, he was then 6 years old. We learned so much from each other, we were both each other’s teacher and learner!

Because stacking is a compound behaviour I began by making a sort of mind-map of the teaching, going from visualising the final behaviour to identifying each individuaI component and its skills. Some of the skills were previous skills others were yet to teach. I then made a plan for teaching each skill well before chaining one skill to the other.

We had already been clicker training since his early age, so stamina and endurance had been built over time, I knew what was realistic to expect from him. Nevertheless this was a new compound behaviour for us to explore. From experience I knew that the emotional context in Kavat’s learning environment is very important in order to avoid frustration and stress.

I video learning sessions because I find videos very useful for understanding my own errors, improving my own learning curve and strive for becoming a better teacher. They help me see what I don’t notice when the session is going on.

The film above is in fact many videos edited into one. The focus of the film is on the end behaviour, not on teaching its individual skills and component behaviours.
